This is a copy of the letter that we have sent to Menu Foods.
To whom it may concern, or anyone who cares.
Over the past month my husband and I have gone through what I hope no other loving pet owner ever has to go through. We watched our beautiful, purebred golden lab, Emma, wither away to nothing due to liver failure. We watched her organs take any protein they could get from her muscles, leaving her a skeleton. We watched her vomit, shake from pain, lose all energy, appetite and drive to live. We watched her dieing before our eyes. So ultimately we had to make the decision to spare her anymore pain and we put her down on March 15th , 2007 at the age of Seven. It was without a doubt one of the hardest things we’ve ever had to do. There is now a void in our lives which no amount of compensation could ever fill, we can’t snuggle at night with your compensation, or sit on the front porch on a summer’s eve with your compensation, we can’t play fetch with your compensation and most of all your compensation can’t ever give back the unconditional love we lost. We honestly don’t know if your lack of caution in the manufacturing of dog food had any effect on her condition, and we are not looking for compensation from you. We are merely trying to voice an opinion. While Emma was sick she lost her appetite, so we tried countless types of food ( both dog and human) just to get her to eat enough to keep up her strength to get through another day. After numerous failures we found the only thing we could get her to eat was canned cuts in gravy dog food. We thought she would be getting what she needed from it, and we put our trust in your company. One week after her death we found out not only were we not helping her, but we could have possibly been poisoning her kidneys, which were already working overtime to compensate for her failing liver.
So now, after having made that horrible decision, trying to ease Emma’s pain, we find ourselves looking at our black lab (Xena) and our pug ( Rosco) wondering if your food has poisoned and is killing two more parts of our family. They too had some of the canned food. Rosco did vomit, but we didn’t think too much of it at the time.
When a company makes a product and puts their name on it, One could only hope that they would take the utmost care to manufacture the best product possible, especially when their product is for something as valuable as man’s best friend. Emma really was our best friend and nothing will ever replace her. I just hope this letter helps you to realize, pets are not a statistic. When you say one in six pets died from your error and owners will be compensated, you are making Emma a statistic. She was a living, breathing part of our family that will never be forgotten.

PS: Thank you for your information on how much this recall is going to cost you are your shareholders on your website, I think a heartfelt apology to the pet owners is a little more important at this time. Afterall without the pet owners buying your products your shareholders won’t have much to look forward too!
