I enjoy the show. However, please, please allow the health segments of the shows to get as much coverage as the endless politics, the celebrities and other such fluff. Our health is THE most important part of our lives. Yet, it seems Today rushs through the interviews and I would so like to see more time devoted to this type of information. I realize that everyone wants something different and I am just one of many viewers. I still think it’s worthwhile and would like to see more time given to our well being.

Hi:
When there is something of interest on the show that I wish to read further about, it is very difficult to locate that segment, i.e. Czar Who Would Be King.

Thank you for taking the time to make suggestions about safe and proper ways to deal with dogs. As a breeder of many years, however, I was disappointed that you failed to point out the MOST important safety tip for ALL people, especially children: Ask the dog’s handler for permission before you or your child approach the animal. If the dog is loose, one should never approach the animal if you are with children; contact your local animal control to rescue the dog.
Before one employs the suggestion made in your report to approach a dog from underneath, or quietly, ASK! The dog’s owner or handler should know whether the dog is social, or comfortable with children. I have two beautiful dogs, and I socialize them and take them out in public. One adores children; the other is rather suspicious of them. While I am quite confident that my younger dog would never hurt a child, I stop small ones from petting him, and direct them to my female dog, who provides the child with tons of dog loving. Then I tell the child that they are really helping the younger dog to learn about how wonderful people are. Kids always understand that.

Its fun to watch your audience shrinking. Do you ever wonder why that is so. Perhaps it’s because your broadcast offers little in the way of truth. It truley is pathetic that you actually choose to be wrong when the FACTS are right there to be seen, but when they (the facts) contradict your viewpoint, you change the facts, not your reporting. Its laughable.

Thanks for asking Mayor Bloomburg the pointed question, was NYC following the lead of other cities, or was NYC leading the way in going green with its new taxis and other emissions-reducing innovations. Shame on Mayor Bloomburg for not mentioning the Cool Cities campaign that has got so many large and small cities to sign on to the promise to reduce global warming emissions by a certain date! Mayor Bloomburg’s response was such an embarrassed dodge–why can’t he be magnanimous and give credit where credit is due? I’m guessing it’s because the Cool Cities campaign has grown out of the refusal of the federal government, led by his fellow Republican Geo. W. Bush, to do anything in response to the climate change crisis. The embarrassment of Bush. I suppose we must be grateful that his embarrassment did not prevent him from signing on to Cool Cities.

I live in Australia and I watch the show most weekday mornings. I like the people and the topics. What I do find is that the timings allowed for each of your segments is extremely insulting to the people who have given their time to be on your show. I would say 90% of your segments are rushed with people being cut off. I would prefer if you had less segments and let each on finish completely. We also get Good Morning America at the same time as Today is on and they don’t do the same thing.

I saw your segment on the “DOGS GONE WILD”.
I’m not sure where you acquired your dog trainer/expert, Steve Diller, but that he wasn’t, or so he didn’t appear to be.
He failed to answer Matt’s most important question: You’re in this situation, you’re a parent, and a dog is biting your kid, as a parent, what do you do?
Steve: “Well, you got to try and get the dog off as fast as you can†Any two year old and up could answer that question. It just seemed to go down hill from there.
OK, now that I have that off my chest, let’s move on.
I’d like to share some of my semi expert experience advice.
I first want to explain I’m not a professional expert or trainer. But what I do have is years of experience with a lot of common animals. Wild to tame.
I’ll answer Matt’s question………..What to you do?
This in part depends on a few things. Dogs like most wild animals instinctively go for one item or target. In this case the child. Don’t know why (many reasons) don’t care. If you (parent) are in a position to get between the dog and your child, do so. Keep your child behind your legs up close to you! You have now changed the dog’s course. He will still try to get the child (target) but now he has to deal with you. The dog might decide you are too big of a threat and back off, or he might try to bite you instead. (This is better than your child being bit). When you are between your child and the dog, IT IS IMPORTANT TO STAND YOUR GROUND!, YELL AND SCREAM AT THE DOG WHILE WAVING YOUR ARMS SPREAD OUT UP AND DOWN. Make yourself look BIG to the dog! ALWAYS FACE THE DOG. Doing this will get the dogs attention and usually get the dog to stop in his tracks. The dog will continually to bark and growl but the advancement towards you will usually cease. AT THIS POINT, DO NOT MOVE FROM YOUR GROUND. The dog will only come at you if he sees you retreating. If you do, BACK UP SLOWLY. The dog will follow your retreat, but usually keep his distance. Be prepared to yell and scream again if the dog gets to close. Again Don’t Run. If the owner is around, wait for the owner to take control of his dog. I can testify to this many times in my life, growing up I used to do door to door sales, and I never met a dog on the street that I didn’t liked, but usually didn’t like me. This has worked on taco dogs to German Shepard’s to Doberman’s.
A second option is to hold you child in the air, up high, or put them on the top of a car, or play gym, and yell and scream at the dog even kick the dog if necessary, but only as a last result if the dog is biting you. Again the dog is targeting who? If he is after you, tell your child it WALK AWAY, or climb up on something while you scream and wave your arms and hands at the dog.
OK, last result. The dog, any dog, even a pit bull has a hold bite on you or worse your child. These dogs’ jaws are strong, and they are tough. Don’t play tug of war with your child, or your body part. You won’t win. It’s hard not to panic. Dogs can’t tolerate their tongue being pushed down in their mouth.
This will hurt, and you might get your hand bit (usually a quick snap bite) but force your fingers or thumb into his mouth and push down on his tongue while pushing up with the other fingers, or thumb on the underside of his mouth. Every dog will let go of their bit/grip, back off and try to attack again. This is especially important if the dog has a grip on a vital part of the body, i.e. the neck. If you’re strong, keep your grip on the lower jaw of his mouth and pull him almost any direction you want. The dog will twist and claw to try to get loose. And usually when they do, they naturally snap at your hand as they back off.
Try this at home with your own dog. Play with him, have him grab a rag or chew toy. Play Tug-of-War. While he and you are pulling reach into his mouth with your fingers and simply push down on his tongue. He will always let go. Most dogs know you’re the leader of your pack and won’t bite you. Although he will usually try to re-grab the target, or in this case the toy.
If the dog looks more like he is protecting his territory, (and all dogs have this, their dwelling and their owner) and is barking and dancing around you, the best thing to do is STAND STILL. Don’t yell, don’t scream. Just stand still. Most dogs like the chase game. Don’t be the chase toy or target.
I hope my experiences with dogs helps. I’ve trained old and new dogs, and have had a lot of complements with mine and others I’ve worked with.
Steve, good luck trying to catch the back two legs of a dog, with his ability to hold on to his target and dance around, my money is on the dog.
Take care,
Todd
