    Cactuseaters on the Today Show
I am on the Today Show, Tuesday morning (Seriously!) at some point between 730 and 8 a.m., talking, with two other dudes, about male menopause and other issues, including male fertility, etcetera. They taped the segment today. Among other things, they had me talking about aging, talking about my Dad, and at one point I smooched my wife in front of a zillion potential TV-land viewers.

On Tuesday morning I will watch myself and find out how I look on TV. They didn’t give me any make-up (unlike a cable access program in Santa Cruz, where they put so much pancake make-up on me that I looked like Gray Davis.) It was pretty casual and fun, and I got to check out the Big Room where Al Roker and Matt Lauer hang out. Also, they had me use the same throat-microphone that George Clooney used last week.

I am from Santa Cruz, California, and now living in New York. I’m attending Columbia’s MFA program and teaching in Undergraduate Writing at Columbia.

One thing I forgot to mention (in my bio for the segment) is that my first book, “The Cactus Eaters,” a travel memoir, is being published next year by HarperCollins. I was interested in taking part in the Today Show on-the-air discussion in part because I’ve delayed fatherhood for a short while on acocunt of my unconventional career choices (moving to NYC with my wife, going back to grad school, writing a book for publication and starting an academic job search …) I learned a lot from taking part in this TV segment; I think it will be food for thought for a lot of people!

    Political News A Plenty:
With the President continuing his trip to Latin America tomorrow, the possibility of Sen. Chuck Hagel announcing his candidacy for the ‘08 race and the call for one Hollywood actor to become the next Ronald Reagan (and it can’t be Arnold), the political arena is abuzz. We’ll have reports from Andrea Mitchell and Kelly O’Donnell. Joe Scarborough will also weigh in as the ‘08 field expands for the Republicans.

    Kidnapped Baby Found:
We’ve been following this story since it broke early Saturday morning. Today the news came that the baby had been found safe. The suspect was taken into custody and the baby was reunited with her mother. We’ll have the latest on the story tomorrow.

What Does Your Body Language Say?
Did you know that on average a person develops an opinion about you in 90 seconds? It doesn’t seem like much, but in that time you’re body language can impact your business deals, love life and friendships. Tomorrow on the show, we’ll have a specialist who will explain what you communicate with your body language.

    Don’t Miss Cyndi Lauper!
We have the music legend LIVE on the show tomorrow. She’ll be here to perform her hit song “True Colors” and tell us about her upcoming tour to benefit the Human Rights campaign.

This is in reply to segment on paing students for taking and passing AP exams. The segment did not bring out that it costs almost $100.00 to take an AP Test. Student or family paid. So this program sounds a lot like some programs for college tuition already available where tuition is reimbursed once the college course is passed. College instructors have to be paid, and AP teachers are basically PT college instructors, as the goal is college credit. I’ll take that reimbursement as a teacher or as a student for the extra money I or my parents or grandparents! put into my high school academics. The reality is also, coaches are often reimbursed above basic salary in many systems.

re kids and celll phones, when are you going to run a most important (I think) suggestiion for all kids’phones: ICE!
quite simply, spread the idea started after the British subway bombings a year or so ago. the police and fire depts. urge people to have a category labelled ICE on each cellphone, and therein list the name(s) of people to be contacted In Case of Emergency. It’s pretty well established that kids might leave home without their wallets but they’d never leave w/o their cell phones, and the police/fire personnel can look in their cells to find out who they are. The idea has spread around the world, and locally our fire dept. is one of the promoters. I’m the local ‘tipster’ who admires
ingenious solutions to things, so call or fax or email me back for other seemingly small but helpful items for your day! Phone 216 292 6748, Fax 216 292 6642, and the email is above. Thanx Betsy Tip

This morning Meredith was welcoming Matt back and said something like “I was perilling(sp?) about your vacation.” Maybe I didn’t catch the right pronunciation, and spelled it wrong, but at any rate, I’m confused and curious; WHAT was the word and it’s meaning????

Where is your information on the segment on today’s (3-12-07) show about children associating with perhaps the “wrong” friends? I was very interested in this, want more information or at least a recap of what was said. My daughter is having what sounds like the same problems with her daughter and I think would be very helpful. Am I writing this question in the correct place? I find your web site not very easy to find what I’m looking for. Does anyone have the time or desire to help me with this?

I don’t know what to put in the box labeled “website”. What does that mean?
I’m assuming that “mail” means my e-mail address?

Please correct me if I’m wrong.

    Confusing!

Congratulations to Ann Curry for being on the show for ten years. In my humble oppion Ann is the STAR of the show. Everyone should be as sweet, humble and kind as Ann. Her goodness shines through in every segment.

Today Show, Concerning fashions that were shown outside this week, I’ve forgotten what day, they were so cute and reasonable. Where can I get them? I particularly loved the black trench with cutouts on the bottom. Please help. Warmly, Virginia Rice
